The policy has been introduced for the following reasons:

• Wearing a swimming hat helps to reduce pollutants in the water and therefore allows us to reduce the amount of chemicals we need to use, making the water quality even better. It also helps prevent pool closures due to water clarify and hair blocking pool filters.

• Swimming hats help to prevent ear infections and help to protect hair from chlorine and other pool chemicals.

• Hats help keep long hair out of pupils’ faces

• Swimming hats act as a safety feature, as the swimming teacher can identify swimmers easily

Considerations:

We understand some children have sensory issues – those with SEN diagnosis we recommend fabric material hats over silicone – any issues please get in contact with us.

Strokes Swim School will operate a “3 strike rule” for children who forget or refuse to wear the swimming hat:

• 1st strike – a verbal reminder to parents that hats need to be worn.

• 2nd strike another verbal reminder on poolside that the child should wear a swimming hat during lessons.

• 3rd strike – parent is told that the next time the child arrives without a swimming hat they will not be allowed to participate in the lesson.

• 4th occasion that child arrives without hat they are informed that they can’t participate unless they purchase a new hat of their choice.

We will have spare swimming hats on poolside that children can use at their own risk. These will be used swimming hats and must be handed back at the end of the session. This is a short-term fix if hats have been forgotten only.

Replacement hats can be purchased on our Etsy shop called Strokes Swim School. It is not a requirement to wear a Strokes Swim School branded hat but it is preferred.
