Who We Are
A swim school you can trust
Strokes Swim School is a family-run swim school offering swimming tuition for all ages and abilities across Essex. Our team is highly trained and qualified, and we genuinely enjoy teaching swimmers at every stage — from tiny first splashes through to strong, confident strokes.
We welcome babies from 2 months, children and teenagers through to 18 years. Wherever you are starting from, our goal is the same: safe progress, clear technique, and growing confidence in the water.
Founded in 1993 by Joni Hales, Strokes Swim School has grown steadily over three decades while keeping the values that matter most: small classes, qualified teachers, and a warm, encouraging environment where every swimmer can thrive.

What makes Strokes different
STA Swim Star Swim School
We follow the STA Learn to Swim Programme, a nationally recognised framework that gives swimmers clear milestones and a path from first dip through to advanced lifesaving awards.
Small class sizes
Beginners classes have a maximum of 5 swimmers. Our boutique private pools take a maximum of 3. Every child gets real attention and real progress.
Fully qualified teachers
All our instructors hold STA qualifications and full DBS clearance. Safeguarding is central to everything we do, and our team is regularly trained and observed.
